Statement from Sheriff Jones:
“Congressman Bera’s increasingly desperate campaign has sunk to a new low by airing an ad containing allegations that are not only 13 years old, but are patently false. I have denied these allegations repeatedly, including during testimony under oath. I have never been the subject of any internal complaint of misconduct of any kind during my 27-year career with the Sheriff’s Department, and have consistently opened up my personnel records for review.
“To repeat, these allegations are without merit, corroboration or evidence and I deny them in the strongest possible terms. The fact is that Congressman Bera has consistently run negative, deceptive and inappropriate campaigns, and has doubled down this time because of his own shortcomings and his precarious hold on the seat. I call on Bera to immediately pull down this false smear ad. Unfortunately, although we could hope for –and should expect– more from our elected officials, experience tells me to expect the worst from him throughout the next 53 days.”
“It should be very clear to the people of the Seventh District what is going on here. Congressman Bera’s flagging and increasingly desperate campaign is trying to shift the blame from his campaign’s own illegal — and felonious — behavior to smear someone who has spent 27 years protecting the people of his county,” said Jones’ campaign consultant Dave Gilliard. “It’s understandable. Congressman Bera’s laughable claims of ignorance while watching his father go to prison show the true character of this congressman. And it’s clear he understands that his only path to re-election is by smearing Sheriff Jones rather than making the case for himself.”
